Tennis and Soccer Lead the Way for Torero Triumphs

Tennis glory, soccer success, and NIL milestones for your Toreros!

HISTORY MADE IN TULSA

ITA Singles & Doubles Champion: Oliver Tarvet!

In a historic triumph at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oliver Tarvet has etched his name in the pantheon of tennis greatness. After clinching the singles title, Tarvet partnered with fellow Torero Stian Klaassen to secure the doubles crown, marking an extraordinary double victory.

This remarkable feat marks the first time in nearly a decade that a player has captured both the singles and doubles titles in the same year. Tarvet, currently ranked third in collegiate tennis, is solidifying his legacy as one of the most exceptional athletes ever to don the USD Toreros jersey. As the sole Torero to claim the ITA Singles trophy, his place among the elite is undisputed.

This stellar performance has earned Klaassen and Tarvet coveted spots in the NCAA Individual Championships, scheduled for Nov. 18-24. Their qualification underscores the duo's exceptional skill and promises an exciting showcase of talent on the national stage.

MEN’S SOCCER SHINES BRIGHT

The No. 21 ranked San Diego men's soccer team (7-1-2, 1-0-0 WCC) launched their West Coast Conference campaign with a convincing 4-2 victory over Saint Mary's at Torero Stadium on Saturday night.

The Toreros, riding high on an impressive season, displayed their offensive prowess with goals from Ethan Warne, Samy Kanaan, Cesar Bahena, and Steven Ramirez. Kanaan notched his sixth goal of the season, while Bahena added his fifth, highlighting the team's multi-faceted attack that has propelled them to their current national ranking.

USD unleashed 27 shots compared to Saint Mary's seven. Goalkeeper Donovan Parisian contributed both defensively and offensively, making crucial saves and even assisting on a goal.

Head Coach Brian Quinn's team continues to impress, blending veteran leadership with emerging talent. They'll look to maintain their momentum as they face Gonzaga in their next conference match this Friday, October 4th.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Keenan Masullo

Keenan Masullo (Lineback), a 2015 graduate and former member of USD's Swim & Dive team, recently shared her Torero experience with us. Her journey from student-athlete to successful Project Manager exemplifies the lasting impact of USD's athletic program.

During her time at USD, Keenan balanced rigorous academics with 20 hours of weekly training. Her favorite memory? The electrifying support at the MPSF Conference Championships. "Celebrating milestones like swimming best times and breaking records alongside such a close group of women is something I'll never forget," Keenan reminisces.

Keenan credits her student-athlete experience for developing crucial professional skills:

  • Time management

  • Performing under stress

  • Teamwork

These skills have proven invaluable in her career as a Project Manager, where she describes herself as "the glue that holds the team together."

To current Toreros, Keenan advises: "Cherish the moment! Everyone always says how quickly those 4 years go, and they couldn't be more right."

Although no longer local to San Diego, Keenan stays connected through alumni events, Torero Tuesday, and following USD athletics updates online.

Her parting wisdom? "Take advantage of all of the different offerings that USD provides. Whether that be the Career Development Center, free tutoring for athletes, or networking events, there is a wide array of opportunities to set yourself up for success at USD and beyond."

Keenan's story is a testament to the enduring impact of the USD experience. We're proud to have her as part of our Torero family!
