Serving Up History and Championships

The USD Men's Tennis team continues to rewrite the program's history books with a remarkable series of achievements this spring.

Last Saturday, the seventh-ranked Toreros secured their eighth West Coast Conference Tournament title in the past nine seasons, defeating No. 23 Pepperdine 4-2 at the Aztec Tennis Center in a display of determination and resilience.

Despite falling behind early after losing the doubles point, the Toreros showcased their trademark mental toughness with an impressive singles performance to claim their second consecutive conference tournament championship.

This victory caps an exceptional regular season that saw them clinch their fourth straight WCC regular season title just a week earlier.

With this championship win, the team improved their overall record to an outstanding 23-3, including an impressive 11 victories against top-25 opponents this season. These accomplishments have earned the Toreros the No. 6 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament—the highest in program history—and the privilege of hosting regional matches for the first time ever.

Head Coach Ryan Keckley, now in his tenth year leading the program, views these milestones as the culmination of a decade-long journey. While the Toreros have made NCAA Tournament appearances before, hosting represents a breakthrough moment for USD tennis and validates the strategic vision Keckley has implemented since taking the helm in 2015. The tennis program now joins other successful USD teams like women's volleyball and men's soccer who have hosted NCAA events in recent years.

What distinguishes this year's squad is the exceptional chemistry they've developed both on and off the court. The team has fostered a family-like atmosphere, with players who live, study, and train together. This cohesion has translated to unprecedented success, including posting the best regular-season record in program history and displaying remarkable resilience in high-pressure situations, frequently prevailing in close matches.

The NCAA Tournament draw presents significant challenges ahead. First up is UC Irvine, a formidable first-round opponent fresh off their own conference championship and ranked in the top 45 nationally. The regional also features powerhouse programs USC and Arizona State, led by respected coaches Brett Masi and Matt Hill. Despite the difficult path, Keckley and his team embrace the opportunity to compete against elite competition.

Home-court advantage could prove decisive in the tournament, and Keckley hopes to see overwhelming community support at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. A packed venue with hundreds of energetic fans would create an electric atmosphere that benefits not only the current team but also raises the profile of USD tennis throughout San Diego.

Join us this Friday at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center as USD Men's Tennis hosts NCAA Tournament action for the first time in program history.

Toreros Surge to Top of Conference after Thrilling Win at Gonzaga

via USD Athletics

San Diego baseball mounted an impressive offensive rally on Sunday, scoring nine runs in the final three innings to defeat Gonzaga 15-9 at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The crucial victory secured two wins in the weekend series for the Toreros (17-25, 11-4 WCC), elevating them to a tie with the Bulldogs (19-21, 11-4 WCC) atop the WCC standings.

Sunday's contest featured an extraordinary power display with ten total home runs. Despite Gonzaga's Max Coupe connecting for three homers, USD's balanced offensive attack prevailed with six different Toreros hitting home runs throughout the game.

The win arrives at a pivotal moment as USD enters the final nine-game stretch of conference play with significant momentum. After navigating early-season challenges, the team has discovered their rhythm at the perfect time, positioning themselves favorably to defend their WCC championship.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Reddemann continues to anchor the pitching staff with his standout performance this season, compiling a 3-1 record and maintaining an exceptional 2.38 ERA through nine starts.
