Torero Baseball Pockets Season-High Score

The Torero baseball squad sent a powerful message to the West Coast Conference this weekend, dismantling Santa Clara 25-9 in Sunday's series-deciding game to secure their sixth consecutive WCC series victory.

The Toreros notched a season-high 25 runs and tied their season best with 21 hits in an offensive explosion at Stephen Schott Stadium. The victory brought an impressive 16-5 record in WCC play as they continue their remarkable conference run.

The team launched five home runs, including a grand slam, with standout Isaiah Lane finishing with three runs and five RBIs. This performance showcases why the Toreros remain one of the hottest teams in the WCC conference, having won 14 of their last 17 games.

Head Coach Brock Ungricht noted how the team has consistently shown their ability to overcome challenges this season, exemplified by their tremendous response following the previous day's difficult loss. According to Ungricht, this mental toughness and determination has become a hallmark of this year's squad.

The win extends USD's impressive streak in conference play, maintaining their position as serious contenders for the WCC crown and a potential NCAA Tournament berth. With the postseason on the horizon, the Toreros are peaking at the perfect time.

NEW CHAMPIONSHIP INVESTMENT FUND

Making Your Mark in the Future of USD Athletics!

via USD Athletics

The future of USD Athletics takes a powerful leap forward with the launch of our Championship Investment Fund: a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower Torero student-athletes in the rapidly evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.

As we approach the July 1 introduction of revenue sharing across college sports, pending the House settlement approval, USD is positioning itself to remain competitive with top programs in the West Coast Conference. Unlike third-party NIL collectives, this fund is managed directly by USD Athletics to advance team-based priorities where they're needed most.

This approach allows the Toreros to remain agile. Coaches and administrators will strategically allocate resources to areas with the greatest programmatic need and potential impact across all 17 Torero sports.

Your donations to both the investment fund and the Spring Sports Campaign are what make a difference amongst our Torero community!

MAKING AN IMPACT

USD Women’s Basketball Volunteers in the Mission Hills Community

via USD Athletics

Our Torero women's basketball team took their talents off the court and into the community on May 8 by spending an action-packed afternoon at Grant Elementary School in Mission Hills for the school's annual field day.

The entire squad and coaching staff volunteered their time to help over 400 young students enjoy a day of sports and friendly competition. Our Toreros led activities including volleyball, kickball, and basketball, ensuring students stayed active while having fun in the sun.

What makes this community outreach particularly special is that it comes just weeks after Coach Blanche Alverson joined the program. Despite the demands of transitioning into her new role, she prioritized community engagement and service—a true reflection of USD's commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes.

Grant Elementary's P.E. teacher was thoroughly impressed with our Toreros' enthusiasm and positive impact, noting how the players modeled excellent behavior for the young students throughout the event.

This outreach exemplifies USD Athletics' dedication to not just building championship teams, but also developing student-athletes who make meaningful contributions to the San Diego community.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Softball Stars Score Big in the Classroom

via USD Athletics

Three outstanding members of the USD Softball team have earned spots on the 2025 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team, showcasing their excellence both on the diamond and in the classroom.

Graduate students McKenna Braegelmann (Psychology) and Alyssa Hernandez (Leadership Studies), along with senior EJ Joyner (Real Estate), received this prestigious recognition for their exceptional dedication to academics while contributing significantly to the team's success.

This marks the third academic conference recognition for Braegelmann, who made the all-academic first team in 2024 and was an honorable mention in 2022. Joyner returns to the all-academic team after being selected in 2024, while Hernandez makes her first appearance on the list.

Additionally, Mikalyn Emanuelli, Emma Giaime, and Kelsey Tadlock were named WCC All-Academic Honorable Mentions, with Emanuelli and Giaime each honored previously in 2024 and Tadlock making her debut among the conference's academic honorees.

To qualify for this honor, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average while being significant contributors to their team and in at least their second year at USD.

Join us in congratulating these Toreros who exemplify USD's commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes!
