FOOTBALL RECAP

Toreros Surge Past Davidson in Cross-Country Trek

Upon returning from their bye week, San Diego Football made a statement back in the action with a commanding 40-28 road victory over Davidson on Saturday in North Carolina.

The Toreros (4-4, 2-2 PFL) seized control in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 12-0 in the final frame to secure their first October win. After entering the fourth tied, USD responded with a field goal, touchdown, and safety to pull away.

Junior quarterback Dom Nankil orchestrated the offense brilliantly, completing 25 of 36 passes for 288 yards. His favorite target, senior receiver Cole Monach, torched the Davidson secondary for 113 yards and two touchdowns on six catches, extending his scoring streak to four consecutive games.

The ground attack came alive with the return of USD's top running backs. Senior Adam Criter rushed for 73 yards and two scores in his first game back, while graduate Matt Colombo opened the scoring with a tough 3-yard touchdown plunge on fourth down.

Sophomore Emiliano Salazar earned Pioneer Football League Week 9 Special Teams Player of the Week honors after a stellar all-around performance that included a field goal, perfect extra points, and exceptional punting.

The Toreros return home to face Dayton on November 1 at 1 p.m.

Toreros Complete Thrilling Reverse Sweep Over Washington State

San Diego Volleyball showcased remarkable resilience on Saturday afternoon, rallying from a two-set deficit to defeat Washington State 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-10, 15-8) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The first-place Toreros (16-4, 9-0 WCC) extended their winning streak to nine consecutive matches, all in conference play, remaining the only undefeated team in West Coast Conference competition.

After dropping the opening two sets, including a second frame where the Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead, USD completely flipped the script. Head coach Jennifer Petrie challenged star setter Kylie Munday to utilize the entire roster, and the result was a masterclass in offensive distribution.

Four Toreros recorded double-digit kills in the comeback victory. Nemo Beach paced the attack with 18 kills, while graduate transfer Kali Engeman was virtually unstoppable, hitting an impressive .619 with 15 kills. Freshman sensation Ava Durgan, already a two-time WCC Freshman of the Week in 2025, added a career-high 10 kills.

San Diego seized control after intermission, trailing just once across the final three sets and winning two consecutive frames wire-to-wire to seal the dramatic comeback.

USD now turns its attention to San Francisco, hosting the Dons on Thursday, October 30 at 7 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

It was a weekend of dramatic finishes for USD Soccer, as both programs demonstrated championship character in crucial West Coast Conference matchups.

Las Toreras showed up and out on Saturday night at Torero Stadium, rallying twice to earn a 2-2 draw against Loyola Marymount. Senior captain Josefine Schlichting provided the heroics with a spectacular equalizer from over 20 yards out in the 87th minute. The German native also set up USD's first goal with a beautiful pass to junior midfielder Maquena O'Callaghan.

Junior goalkeeper Ilise Medrano kept the Toreras in the match with six crucial saves, while the draw extended USD's program-high single-season tie tally to seven. Schlichting now leads the team with six goals and 15 points on the season.

Meanwhile, the 12th-ranked men's team continued its hot streak with a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over Saint Mary's, improving to 10-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in WCC play. The match remained scoreless until Luca Fava's shot ricocheted off teammate Steven Ramirez before a Gaels defender inadvertently knocked the rebound into his own net.

Goalkeeper Lucca Adams recorded four saves to earn his sixth clean sheet in 10 appearances this season. The victory marks the Toreros' third consecutive conference win as they remain in contention atop the WCC standings.
