Adrian McIntyre's Homecoming: All Roads Led to USD

How your generosity has allowed graduate guard to thrive at USD, both on the court and beyond

STUDENT-ATHLETE FEATURE

How Family, Community, & Basketball Converged for USD Guard

When Adrian McIntyre transferred to the University of San Diego, he was not just looking for his next basketball opportunity. He was searching for a place where his one-year-old daughter could explore and grow, where his girlfriend could build community, and where he could develop a future beyond the final buzzer. What he discovered at USD far surpassed McIntyre’s expectations. He found a home at San Diego.

The 6-foot-3 graduate guard from Sylmar, California, arrived at USD after stops at Ventura College and Westmont College. His journey through junior college and Division II basketball prepared him to compete, but nothing prepared him for what USD would mean to him personally.

What makes USD special? For McIntyre, it starts with the people.

"It's life-changing," McIntyre says about the support he's received from the Olé Foundation and USD's community. "It's like a breath of fresh air knowing that I have the support of my coaches, the academic staff, but also the donors, knowing that they support me just as much, even if it's not on a face-to-face, day-to-day basis."

On the court, his role centered on scoring at Ventura and Westmont.
But at the Division I level, McIntyre has evolved and discovered something deeper.

"I've just seen basketball in a different light to where there's a lot of little things that go into the game outside of scoring that help our team succeed," McIntyre says.

But ask McIntyre about his teammates and he'll tell you about real connections. His partnership with point guard Ty-laur Johnson and Alejandro Aviles opens up the floor.

"I love everybody on the team,” McIntyre says. “If I was locked in a room with anybody on the team, I'm sure we'd have a great time."

The support of the USD community has allowed McIntyre to grow, to live, and to move in ways he couldn't have imagined before. It's given him opportunities that extend far beyond the basketball court. And it's inspired something deeper in him.

"When I'm in a situation later in life, I wanna help out how I was helped out," McIntyre says. "I don't think you'll commonly find the way that the Olé Foundation shows that love and support to the student athletes."

Adrian McIntyre with his Girlfriend and Daughter

This is what your generosity creates. Not just a roster spot, but a place where a graduate student athlete can grow on campus with family by his side.

"I knew the University of San Diego was gonna be the place we wanted to be," McIntyre reflects. "And now that it's getting closer to that time, the University of San Diego is going to be the place that I don't want to leave."
